Paul Zafer, violin

Paul Zafer currently serves as Concertmaster of the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago.  He is also a member of the Lake Forest Symphony, the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra in Wisconsin and the Ars Viva String Quartet.  Additionally, he is an active teacher/clinician and is on faculty at the Wheaton College Conservatory.  In the summer he is on staff at Camp Musical de Laurentides in Quebec and the JVL music camp in Ontario, Canada.

A native Canadian, Mr. Zafer made his solo debut with the Calgary Philharmonic at age 14.  He received an Artist Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from the University of Toronto and a Master of Music degree from Northern Illinois University.

He has appeared as soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta,  the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, the San Francisco Ballet and has performed with the English Chamber Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Andre Segovia Chamber Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera and the National Ballet of Canada.  His Guest Concertmaster appearances have included performances with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra the Lincoln Symphony in Nebraska, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Orchestra.   He also has appeared in many Broadway shows in Chicago and Toronto.

Mr. Zafer credits his artistic influences to the following teachers: his father, David Zafer, Jose-Luis Garcia, Steven Staryk, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and violist Richard Young.  His further studies included coaching sessions with Pinchas Zukerman, James Buswell, Joseph Silverstein, and members of the Orford and Vermeer String Quartets.

In addition to his teaching position, he has also coached students at North Park University, DePaul University, and Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, Stanford University, the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and the University of Toronto.  He has also taught at several music camps including Birch Creek Music Center in Wisconsin, the Courtenay Youth Music Centre in British Columbia.

Mr. Zafer and his wife, violinist Betty Lewis, reside in Wilmette and enjoy cooking, gardening, and running.
