Marcia Labella, harp


Marcia Labella is second chair harpist with Lyric Opera of Chicago and performs as principal harp with Chicago Philharmone, and the Ravinia Festival Orchestra. She has served as principal/solo harpist with American Ballet Theater, Kirov, Bolshoi and Joffrey Ballets, most recently performing in ABT's production of Sleeping Beauty.

Marcia made her debut as comppetition winner and soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 17. That summer she was invited to play with the CSO at Ravinia under James Levine, beginning 22 years of extra-playing with the Chicago Symphony, touring and recording with conductors Sir Georg Solti, Eric Leinsdorf, Carl Maria Guilini, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta and Peirre Boulez.

That same year Marcia began backstage and pit work at Lyric Poera, "jingle" work in Chicago making dozens of TV and radio commercials for companies such as McDonalds, Kraft, Pillsbury,etc; and went on tour with Burt Bacharach. She was soon wirking regularly for Peter Allen, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Steve and Edie, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Frank Sinatra, with whom she toured and contracted musicians until his retirement. Over the years Marcia has performed with dozens of musicians and entertainers including the Three Tenors, Barbara Cook, Rosemary Clooney, Andy Williams, Robert Goulet, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters, Gladys Knight, Charlie Watts, Dennis DeYoung,Shirley McClaine, Jerry Lewis, Carol Channing and Richard Harris.

Marcia has always enjoyed performing chamber music and was principal harpist and soloist for many years with Galena Chamber Ensemble, composed of members of the Chicago Symphony. She has served as accompanist for several CSO players in recital, including Dale Clevenger, Grover Schiltz, Charles Pikler, and Samuel Thaivue.

She has been recorded on a duo CD with Peter Cooper, principal oboe, Colorado Symphony; as principal harp with Cincinnati Pops under Erich Kunzel; with Chicago's Grant Park Symphony and jazz artists John Faddis and Bobby Shew.

Marcia teaches harp and piano at Cappelli Institute of Music in Oak Park,IL and has tought at Northwestern with Edward Druzinsky, principal harpist, CSO, and was awarded the Eckstein Pfrize for Outstanding Performance.

She is the proud mom of adult twins, Peter and James.
