Stewart Goodyear returns for his fifth season at PMF and his seventh performance, sometimes performing in two concerts in a season. He first appearted in 2006 performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 and on the following program, Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3. His next visit in 2009 again included double duty: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 one evening and the Fantasy for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra on another. In 2010 he performed the World Premiere of his Piano Concerto, commissioned by the PMF. His most recent appearance was in 2011 performing Liszt's First Piano Concerto.

In this program, Mr. Goodyear continues his tradition of a "PMF two-fer" with two concertos on a single program. In this concert, he performs the PMF premiere of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto and the third performance at the festival of the First Piano Concerto. Both previous performances, in 1962 and 1982 featured Mary Sauer, the pianist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The concert concludes with Shostakovich's last symphony performed twice previously: in 1991 and 2001 both conducted by Maestro Yampolsky.

Terry Everson, PMF's Principal Trumpet, has soloed previously in four concertos for trumpet: Haydn's in 1997, Torelli's in 2003, Hummel's in 2004, and Neruda's in 2008. In this program, he performs the solo trumpet in Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto.
