Benjamin Firer, conductor

Conductor Benjamin Firer recently completed his third and final season as Music Director of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Orchestras and the Juniata College Orchestra. This year he served as sabbatical instructor of orchestras at Penn State, conducting both the Penn State Philharmonic and Campus Orchestras. Outside of PSU, he is the assistant conductor of the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra collaborating with conductor Yaniv Attar. Firer was was named as an “Emerging Conductor” at the Peninsula Music Festival and will be the conducting fellow at the Atlantic Music Festival.

Benjamin studied orchestral conducting with Gerardo Edelstein at Penn State University and Toshiyuki Shimada at Yale University. While at Yale, Benjamin served as Music Director of the Yale-Saybrook College Orchestra and as a teaching assistant for graduate music theory courses. Recent awards include; the Woolsey Concerto Competition, Yale Chamber Music Competition, Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and Conductors Award at the LIU Chamber Music Festival. As founder of the Aries Chamber Ensemble, he was awarded the 2010 SUNY Thayer Fellowship in the Arts. Benjamin was chosen as Assistant Conductor for l’Orchestra de la Francophonie in Montreal, Quebec for the Summer of 2014, where he assisted Jean-Philippe Tremblay for six weeks of orchestral concerts, including a residency at Le Domaine Forget.

In the Fall of 2016, Benjamin will begin a Doctoral Degree in Orchestral Conducting at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music as a fellowship recipient, studying with renowned violinist and conducting pedagogue Victor Yampolsky.
