Mozart: Symphony #29

Andrew Sewell, Music Director of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra makes his Peninsula Music Festival debut in what has become a tradition for the beginning of the second week: Music from the Old Times, a program of music from the baroque and classical periods. Featuring soloists from the PMF Orchestra, this program includes two works new to the festival: J.C Bach's Sinfonia Concertante and Cimarosa's Concertante. So this concert is, as Victor Yampolsky has noted, "a combination of the old and the new!" The sixth Brandenburg concerto was last performed at the Festival in 1996.

This is music of extraordinary beauty and virtuosity which will provide a perfect showcase for the soloists drawn from the orchestra. In fact, the Mozart Symphony #29 is also a virtuoso tour de force, especially for the two horns, who are actually "unofficial soloists" in this most beautiful and surprising early symphony.

Connections abound: Johann Christian Bach, Johann Sebastian's son, also known as the "English Bach" or "the "London Bach" because of the time he spent in London, influenced Mozart's style. Mozart and Cimarosa were contemporaries and knew each other's work.

Peninsula Music Festival Music Director Victor Yampolsky and Associate Conductor Stephen Alltop have recorded a brief preview of this concert which can be viewed here. Guest Conductor Andrew Sewell has also recorded his comments about this program as well as some of his observations about the Festival which can be viewed here.
