The second week of the 2009 season concludes with a program of first performances at the Festival. Although the music is new to the Festival, the artists are all Festival veterans. The Apollo Chorus of Chicago returns for their fifth Festival appearance.

Although completed three weeks before the news of Nelson's victory arrived at Esterhazy, Lord Nelson later heard the Mass performed during a visit. The vocal writing, particularly for the soloist, is incredibly challenging and Haydn introduces something new: trumpets and timpani. The Arianna a Naxos Motet was composed for harpsichord and voices and later orchestrated after Haydn's death. The rarely performed Beethoven Fantasy for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra shows Beethoven's early musical architecture that later provided elements of the structure of the Ninth Symphony.

The Apollo Chorus of Chicago first performed at the Festival in 2002 in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The Chorus appeared in Handel's Dixit Dominus in 2005, Haydn's Creation in 2005, and Bach's B Minor Mass in 2006.
