The 58th season of the Peninsula Music Festival opens with the return of Maria Bachmann for her fourth appearance. She last appeared in 2004 performing the Mozart Violin Concerto #5. The program begins with the third of the four overtures composed by Beethoven for his opera, Fidelio. This overture is a summary of the opera and is effectively a tone poem. The Barber Violin Concerto was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1941 and is one of Barber's best known works. Perhaps the most played and best known of all Barber's music is the Adagio for Strings, orginally written for a string quartet. The program concludes with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, deservedly a favorite of many.
