Victor Yampolsky, conductor

Frank Martin: Passacaglia for Strings

Schumann: Cello Concerto, Op. 129, A minor
Robert DeMaine, cello

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1, Op. 13 "Winter Dreams"

Music Director Victor Yampolsky opens the second concert of the Festival's 58th season with first PMF performance of the Martin Passacaglia for Strings, a piece that deserves to be better known and will be a showcase for the PMF orchestra strings. In his first PMF appearance, Robert DeMaine, since 2002 the Principal Cellist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, performs the beloved Shumann Cello Concerto, last heard here in 1998. The program concludes with the Symphony #1 of Tchaikovsky titled "Winter Dreams" last performed in 1999. The mood of this symphony is a refreshing contrast to be savored on an August evening.
