August 2010 Symphony Season - Program 5
Thursday, August 12, 2010 - 8:00 PM - Tchaikovsky Fest II

Victor Yampolsky, conductor
Debussy: Three Nocturnes
Corigliano: The Red Violin – Chaconne for Violin
Minghuan Xu, violin
Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker, Op. 71, Act I
This year's Tchaikovsky Fest seems to have a theme of celebrating winter in summer. After hearing Tchaikovsky's Winter Dreams Symphony in Tchaikovsky Fest I, we'll enjoy the complete first act of the Nutcracker Ballet. There is much delightful music in the ballet that is not heard in the suite. This will be a rare chance to savor music associated with the holiday season in summer. (And you may hear the rest of the ballet the following week when Act II is performed.) Because The Nutcracker score calls for a small female chorus, it was a perfect opportunity to perform Debussy's Nocturnes which also requires a female chorus. Violinist Minghuan Xu performs John Corigliano's Red Violin Chaconne, based on music he composed for the film.
All three pieces on this program are receiving their first PMF performance.
