Scholarship + Music Grants

Every year, the Peninsula Music Festival offers one college scholarship, and two summer music study grants to students.

The Peninsula Music Festival’s George Verheyden Memorial College Scholarship is a $3,000 award presented each spring to a graduating senior in Door County. The recipient must be an outstanding music student who demonstrates great ability as a performer, shows dedication and a sustained interest in music, and wishes to further his/her musical studies by pursuing an undergraduate major or minor in music.

  • The Scholarship Committee will review all applications and select one winner. At the end of each academic year, beginning with the completion of the Freshman year, the recipient will be expected to furnish the Scholarship Committee with a written progress report and proof of registration for the following academic year showing a continuation of their major or minor in music. Upon receipt of this progress report, PMF will issue the first of three $1,000 installments of the award. PMF will issue the remaining installments following receipt of the progress reports after the Sophomore and Junior years. Scholarship recipients must use the money for educational expenses. NOTE: PMF retains the right not to select a winner in years where applicants don’t meet the scholarship criteria.

    1. An essay outlining your qualifications, musical accomplishments, academic achievements, college plans, and other suitable information.

    2. A letter of recommendation from a music professional.

    3. A letter of recommendation from your high school principal.

    4. Copies of your high school transcripts. PMF must receive all materials by May 1 of the calendar year. We will notify the winner on/by June 1.

Emerging Conductors

Karen Smuda Emerging Conductor Program

This acclaimed program provides aspiring conductors, this season from Yale University, with training and exposure to a professional symphony orchestra. The Karen Smuda Emerging Conductor Program offers broad experience in all aspects of orchestral conducting and administration to enhance skills and define career goals.

  • Qualifications
    Professional Resume
    Undergraduate degree in Music Performance
    Master’s degree in Conducting
    Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Doctoral Program in Conducting
    Adaptability, self-motivated, ability to work under pressure, and strong communication skills

    Artistic Responsibilities
    Be available to the Music Director and Conductor
    Observe all rehearsals and provide input as requested
    Attend all performances
    Be available to the Music Librarian
    Assist with the distribution and collection of parts and scores
    Assist with bowings
    Participate in Civic Engagement opportunities to discuss your background and career goals

  • "What a joy to attend the opening concert so beautifully performed."

    When I discovered it was the 73rd year I was so excited! I attended the first children’s concert with my Aunt Grace and Addie Crum. We sat on folding chairs in Gibraltar gymnasium. This introduced me to a lifelong appreciation for music of all kinds. I’m 83 and this is one of my cherished memories of Door County.
